Captain John Spann
John[1] Spann. Born, circa 1693, in Norfolk County, VA or Prince Geo. VA. Died circa 1769 in Bertie County, NC or Dobb County, NC.
Steadman says:
Prior to 1725 he moved from Virginia to old Bertie County, N.C., which then included the present counties of Bertie, Northampton and part of Hertford. The State Records of North Carolina contain the following mention of John Spann:
On 29 May 1725 John Spann was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Bertie County.
In 1727 Captain John Spann was appointed a Vestryman for the Northwest Parrish of Bertic County. Other persons appointed at the same time were Benjamin Hill, Richard Pace, Joseph Lane and Major Barnaby McKennie. (The Northwest Parrish apparently included the land which now is Northampton County; therefire, it is determined that John Spann then was a resident of said area).
In 1727 John Spann served as a juror in the Court of General Sessions at Edenton, N.C. (The judicial district in which the court was held embraced the territory of several counties in the north-eastern part of North Carolina).
On 2 March 1739 the petition of John Spann for a patent of 640 acres of land in Edgecombe County was approved. (Edgecombe County then included Granville, Vance, Warren, Franklin, Nash, Halifax, and part of Wilson, and part of Martin Counties. It appears that this trace of land was situated in the present Halifax County and that John Spann settled thereon.)
In 1740 John Spann was on the list of jurrymen for Bertie and Edgecombe Counties. (Evidently a new judicial distric composed of these two counties had been formed after 1727).
The County Note Book (Vol. 7. page 16) for Bertie County shows that on 24 January 1727 John Spann signed his name as a witness to the will of Robert Smith of the said county.
He married Mary Norwood in Surry Co, VA. Born circa 1700 in Surry Conty, VA. Died, after 1754, in Northampton Co, NC. Children:

William Spann. Born circa 1722, in Surry Conty, VA. Died, after 1756, in Sussex Co, VA.
Richard Spann. Born circa 1729, Bertie Precinct, NC. Died, between 1770 and 1781, in Northampton Co., NC.
