HON. JOHN ADAMS WASHINGTON SMITH, (4—6), of Fauquier Co., Va., by June 2, 1781 ; d. Sept. 1, 1832; was educated in Richmond, Va., studied law with Hon. William Marshall ; located in Warrenton, Va., and engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1808 he was appointed Clerk of Fauquier Co., and retained the office until his death in 1832; and was a staunch Churchman; m. (first) Feb. 2, 1806, Maria Love Hawkins, b. 1789; d. July 18, 1826; dau. of Capt. John Hawkins, who served as Adjutant in Col. Thomas Marshall's 3d Va. Reg., Revolutionary War; and (second) Oct. 2, 1827, Julia A. M. (Chapin) McPherson, d. Oct. 5, 1828 ; and (third) Sarah O. Hall, of Loudoun Co., Va.

Issue by first marriage : 5 — 1. Elizabeth Eleanor H., b. Dec. 3, 1806; m. James C. Vass, of Fredericksburg, Va., and had issue. 5 — 2. Francis Lee, of Alexandria, Va., b. Nov. 25, 1808 ; d. May 10, 1877 ; studied law under Judge Tucker, of Winchester, Va. ; he practiced for a few years in Virginia, then removed to Louisville, Ky., where by his intelligence and eloquence he won distinction ; in 1842 he returned to Virginia, and settled at Alexandria; served as a mem ber of the Legislature, of the City Council, and as City Attorney. He opposed secession, but when Virginia seceeded he joined his for tune with his State. He was a zealous and influential member of the Episcopal Church ; he m. April 13, 1836, Sarah Gosnelle Vowell, dau. of John C. Vowell, of Alexandria, Va.
