John Slates, grandfather of our subject, was born in Loudoun county, Va., August 2, 1784, and was married April 10, 1807, to Miss Elizabeth Ruse, also a native of Loudoun county, the union resulting in the birth of seven children, viz: Mrs. Catherine Albaugh, Mrs. Elizabeth Shanover, Mrs. Margaret Woods, Mrs. Mary Richey, Adam, John and Frederick Slates. In 1811, John Slates came to Ohio and entered the land in Loudon township, Carroll county, now occupied and owned by Adam Albaugh. He was by trade a shoemaker and was also a farmer; he accumulated considerable property, gave to each of his children an eighty-acre tract, and still had enough left for his own needs. In politics he was a democrat, and in religion was a member of the Lutheran church, in the faith of which he died in 1859, having lost his wife in 1855.
