John Skinner (1590–1650) was an early Puritan settler in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and one of the founders of Hartford, Connecticut. Skinner was a member of Thomas Hooker's party and probably came to New England from Braintree, Essex, England. He married Mary Loomis, daughter of Joseph Loomis. She later married Owen Tudor.

Skinner's homesite in Hartford was originally (in 1639) "on the west side of Main St., a little below the present [at 1886] corner of Pearl St." However, Skinner traded this lot with Richard Olmsted for a lot on the highway (later Trumbull St.).

Citing Memorial History of Hartford County, Conn., "John Talcott, in his will, Aug. 12, 1659, mentions his kinsman, John Skinner, as 'living in his service,' and as John Talcott's mother was Anne, dau. of William Skinner, it is probable that John Skinner, Sr., came from Braintree, Co. Essex (vol. 1, p. 258)." The John Skinner mentioned by Talcott would be John, son of John the immigrant.

  7. There appears to be no evidence that (1) he was born in Braintree (although as a kinsman of John Talcott, it is quite possible; (2) that he appeared in New England any earlier than 1638; (3) that he died 30 October 1650.
  8. Birth year estimated based on approx birth year of his wife and their approx marriage year (notwithstanding Wikipedia, which does not give a source for stating 1590).
  9. Although the inventory of his estate was not taken until Oct 1651, his widow remarried in Nov 1651, suggesting that he had died several months before the inventory was taken. The court record mentions Windsor, presumably because that is where the court proceedings took place, but other sources suggest that he lived and died in Hartford.
