John is said to have traveled with his father Henry "The Long Hunter" Skaggs into the wilderness of central Kentucky. John however; fell ill and died on one of their explorations.

  5.   A hunting trip for long hunters was usually from October to the Spring. John went with his father on one of these hunts and John became ill and died. The ground was frozen solid so Henry took his son's body and put it down in a hollow tree to protect it from animals. He and Charles Sinclair either returned home or continued the hunt, it's unknown. These facts came from The Historical Society of Southwest Virginia and the author was Emory L Hamilton.
