III. John, Third Earl, was slain in an expedition to Orkney in 1529. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Sutherland of Duffus, by whom he had –
1. William, who died in 1527, without issue.
2. George, his successor.
He had also a natural son, David, who held the office of Bailie to the Bishop of Caithness. In 1556, David’s brother, Earl George, obtained a remission for imprisoning him in Girnigo Castle.
