Century-old mystery endures for Oxford parish A stained glass window marked with the date is the lone landmark inside the church. A small sign marked with the date standing just outside the church steps is the lone landmark outside the church. Both cite the date as a new beginning to a mystery which remains unsolved. The date in question at St. Rose of Lima Church, Oxford, is 1902. It marks 100 years since the re-dedication of the church after a mysterious fire destroyed the original church on Easter Sunday in 1900.

The following is an excerpt from the book Northwestern New Jersey: A History:

"The first Catholic church in Warren County was erected at Oxford in 1858 by Father McKay. Previous to this it was served by Rev. Father McMahon from Newton. The mission at Oxford was successively under Hampton Junction, Phillipsburg, and Washington until 1873, when it became a separate charge. It is known as St. Rose of Lima. The church building was burned on Easter Sunday, 1900, but was rebuilt in another location in 1902. Rev John J. Foley is in charge of Oxford and Bevidere, the latter a mission of the Oxford church, and also cares for stations at Johnsonburg, Blairstown, and Manunka Chunck."
