Betty Smith recalls a story told to her by her grandmother, Elizabeth Shanley Brown, about the older Shanley girls, Jessie and Binie. It was probably Jessie that could not read English and did not speak much English. She spoke Gaelic. She had a crush on a boy who wrote her a letter in English. Jessie gave the letter to her sister, Binie, to read for her. Binie could not read a word of English but she made up something to tell Jessie who had no idea of what was going on.

In September 1884, Jessie was a witness at the wedding of her sister Elizabeth and Alexander Brown, along with a John Cosgrove.

Jessie married Maurice Coleman on December 27, 1890 in St. Peter's Church in Pittsburgh . Betty Smith recalls that she may have had a son who was a ball player. Betty does not remember her personally and it seems Jessie was not close with her sisters, Binie and Elizabeth. Jessie died in Pittsburgh on October 9, 1939. She is buried at Calvary Cemetary.
