Per Louise Dier (great-granddaughter of John W. Seckinger): John W. Seckinger left Sherman, NY in the mid-1880s, first traveling to Grand Island, NE, where he worked for a time for his uncle (Mary's brother, I think it was Henry [Schmitt]). From there, he moved to Dakota Territory in about 1886, settling in what is now Eddy County, ND. His parents later came out to ND, and they are both buried in a small cemeter not too far from the farm. In addition, three siblings also came to North Dakota-- Joseph, Elizabeth (Lizzie) , and Adeline. There were two other sisters, Harriet (Hattie) and Mary. I have no other information on these two women." (29 July 2002 email to Jillaine Smith and Darcy McCabe.)
