John Rugg, the imigrant, was born in England and settled for a time in Watertown, Massachusetts, whence he went to Lancaster, married and settled there in 1654. His will is dated December 9, 1696. He married (First) November 4, 1654, Martha Prescott, who was baptized at Sowerby, England, March 11, 1632, daughter of John and Mary (Platts) Prescott. She died at Lancaster, November 24, 1655. He married (second) May 4, 1660 Hannah Prescott, sister of his first wife. She was killed by the Indians September 11, 1696. [John Prescott's wife was named Mary Gawkroger, see Person:Mary Gawkroger (2). Martha was baptized in Halifax (i.e., that is the parish register it is recorded in), though her father was labelled of Sowerby. In addition, Martha died, according to town records, on 24 Jan 1655/56. This appears to be a calendar error, see Person:Martha Prescott (2). Hannah (Prescott) Rugg was killed in 1697, not 1696, see Person:Hannah Prescott (1).]

"John Rugg m. 1st Nov. 4, 1654, Martha Prescott, bap. at Sowerby, Halifax Parish, England, March 11, 1632, dau. of John and Mary Platts Prescott. She d. at Lancaster, Mass., Nov. 24, 1655. m. 2d, May 4, 1660, Hannah Prescott, a sister of his first wife. She was born after her parents left England, probably at the Barbados where the Prescotts stayed for a time before sailing to New England. She was killed at the time of the Indian Massacre Sept. 11, 1696. No date of the death of John Rugg is to be found, but he made his will Dec. 9, 1696, and the inventory of his estate was taken Jan. 19, 1697, which fixes the date of death between these two dates. 11 children."
