John Roote, son of John Sen., of Farmington, b. a. 1642, in Farmington, Ct. His father, John Root Sen., subscribed the articles of settlement adopted by the planters of Mattatuck, afterwards Waterbury, Ct., and was accepted in behalf of one of his sons, as original proprietor, Jan. 15, 1678. The father, called Goodman Rote, "was one of the committee, in 1677, to take into consideration the expediency of changing the village site. As to the son (John) his name is among those who had a division of fence in 1680, but he is spoken of no more." He probably never lived in Waterbury. He was m. by Rev. Fayette Chapin, Oct. 18, 1664, to Mary, daughter of Robert Ashley, who located first in Roxbury, Mass., and afterwards removed to Springfield, Mass., with Hon. Wm. Pynchon and his company. She was b. Feb. 6, 1644. [Brownson's History of Waterbury, p. 29. From the Hist, of Ancient Windsor, it would appear that Mary, dau. of Robert Ashley of Springfield, Mass., b. April 6, 1 641, m. the second John Root of Farmington, afterwards of Westfield, Mass.—a difference of date.] John Roote Jr., was made freeman in 1669. He held for a time the office of commissary at Westfield, as the General Court of Massachusetts allowed him £14 in 1680, for his services. He d. Sept. 24, 1687, ae. a. 44 or 45, leaving an estate valued at £505. She d. March 9, 1702.
