"John was an early settler in Orange County, North Carolina in that part which is now Chatham County. The first mention of him is found in land grants recorded in 1763 when he was granted 425 acres of land covering both sides of Harland's Creek near the junction where it flows into the Rocky River. This property is situated about five miles southeast of Pittsboro betwe en the Pittsboro-Goldston Road. His will was made and dated in 1800 at Pitts boro. Soloman Roe was listed as Executor of the will and all county records indicate that Soloman was John's son. John Roe left his wife, Mary, a life i nterest in his lands. His will was signed "John Rowe," but since it was made by mark, it is not certain which is the correct way it was spelled. In those days, most of the spelling was by sound. Further records indicate John had military service." -- Jimmy Revell |
