John's father Hugh and his grandparents Robert and Margaret Thornton Rodgers attended the Old Hanover Presbyterian Church also known as "Manada" which is a creek that ran beside the old church building, since demolished.

John and several other men in Hanover including Col Timothy Green as a chairman of that group wrote the Hanover Resolves in 1774. One year before the Mecklenburg Papers in 1775 and two years before the Decloration of Independence in 1776.

The old cemetery that was established behind the Old Hanover Presbyterian Church has a stone wall around it and a gate that is still maintained. A Historical marker includes Col John Rodger's name. However he is not buried there. Members of that old Hanover Church affiliated with Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey when their old church was no longer in use and later demolished. Col. John Rodger's grave is in the cemetery at Hershey and Derry Presbyterian is still an active church.
