Case 18530 "John Reed 1733".

Husbandman", dated 20 Jul 1732, heirs cited 19 Mar 1732/33, proved 16 Apr 1733, mentions wife Abigill, sons John, Ralph, Benjamin; Two grand Chilldren, Chilldren of my son Stephen Reed deceased"; daughter Elizabeth Holding; "five Grand Chilldren, Chilldren of my Daughter Elizabeth Holdin"; son Henry Reed [sole executor]. "Inventory of ye Moveable Estate of John Reed Late of Woobourn in ye County of Middl'sx Deceased March the 9th 1732/3: Taken and aprized by us the Subscribers June ye 14th: 1733." Presented in court 9 Jul 1733.
- John's will mentions sons Benjamin and Stephen for whom no births are recorded and no mention is made by Jacob Whittemore Reed. It appears Susanna and Amos died before 1732. If the children are mentioned in order, Benjamin and Stephen probably younger than Ralph but Henry, appointed executor, is probably the youngest. However, this is a weak assumption given that some are living and some are dead, which may cause the ordering to be different. A Stephen Reed m. 1722 Ann Luther in Swansea and had 2 children, matching parts of the description of deceased son Stephen. According to Jacob Reed, the parents of Stephen Reed of Swansea are unknown, so he is possibly the son, though haven't confirmed his death before 1732 (though in 1743 a guardian for his son Simon was appointed, suggesting he had died by then). There is a Benjamin Reed in Swansea who m. 1720 Hannah Chase, "supposed" to be the son of James and Susanna of Middleborough according to Reed, presumably meaning his parents are also unknown in fact. (An article in Mayflower Descendant, vol. 40, by Alicia Crane Williams says no proof of this has been found and both his parentage and origins in Middleborough are entirely attributable to this unsupported assertion by Reed.) This Benjamin named a son Stephen, raising the possibility that he was the brother of Stephen, and therefore, son of John? If these wild speculations turn out to be supported by fact, the marriage dates suggest they are children of the first wife, Elizabeth.
