About John Price

John Price was born abt. 1696 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [Familysearch.org], although some others claim he was born abt. 1701 in Maryland. His parentage has not yet been determined, with several un-sourced trees claiming otherwise, including one Ancestry.com tree claiming his parents were John Price (1640-1713) and Elizabeth Quinton (1644-1751) of Talbot County, Maryland, although there would be a 56-year gap between father and son, making this somewhat questionable. In addition, the marriage of John Price and Elizabeth Quinton supposedly occurred 1662, which would have been some 34 years BEFORE the birth of this John Price, again making it highly unlikely that they were his parents. There is a John Price in Talbot County records born in 1701, but it appears he died 1728 in Talbot County, Maryland, ruling him out as this John Price. Additional records and sources are needed to determine this John Price's parentage.

John Price married Abigail Gatchell on 17 Nov 1733 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Abigail was the daughter of Elisha Gatchell (1683-1754) and Rachel Wilcos (1685-1760) and was the widow of Enoch Job who had died Feb. 1731/32 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They had two sons together, David Price (abt. 1743-1773) and Elisha Price (1734-1798), and both sons were listed in the will of their mother Abigail Price who died in 1784. John Price apparently died intestate (without a will) in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Although all of Gatchell's children initially married under the care of the monthly meeting, the widow Abigail Gatchell Job married John Price, a non-Quaker, before a minister, apparently with consent of her parents. She was subsequently disowned by Nottingham Monthly Meeting while Elisha and Rachel Gatchell were counseled about their error, the meeting minuting that for the future of all parents were to be "Very Carefull of giveing Way to Such Marriages Either in their own Children or Others".
