Known as 'Dats'. 1881-Not found on UK census; most likely already marriedand in America. All children born in the USA, including a 4th child, Tom, who died of appendicitis when he was 5. Not sure where he fits in the birth order. 1901-living in Aspatria, Cumberland. Did not get household info from 1901 census butmostly likely living with wife and 3 living children. Working as coal miner deputy below ground. Emigrated to Cape Town with Frances, Mary, Sally+Christopher and Bill in 1910/11 on passenger liner Athlone Castle. Worked in diamond mines in Kimberley. Dan, Dats and "Uncle Bills" lived at 52 St Augustyn Street where they raised their grandson Francis John (Frank) from the age of 5.
