1944-obituary-"The Sacramento Bee" 6 Mar 1944; pg 9; col 2; John Myers, 83, Oroville Figure, Succumbs; Oroville (Butte Co) 6 Mar Funeral services for John Myers, 83, chief deputy in the county clerk's office for 28 yrs, with the exception of nine months in 1938, when he was county clerk, will be held here tomorrow. Myers, who had held appointive office in Butte County longer than any other person in Butte County government, died of a stroke in his home here at 7:15pm Saturday. Because of failing health he was forced to quit work last October and recently had been given a leave of absence. Myers was appointed county clerk in April, 1938, by the supervisors, but because of his age, did not seek reelection when his term expired and became chief deputy under W F Matthews, county clerk. He was court clerk in many of Butte County's most famous cases, including the rape trial of Rev Madison Slaughter in 1916. Born in Philadelphia, he studied chemistry and metallurgy in the University of PA. He quit college shortly before graduation to accept a position with the Bunker Hill Mine near Jackson, Amador County. He was with the mine nine and a half years, first as a clerk, then as superintendent. Later he was clerk and assayer for the Gold Bluff Mine in Downieville, Sierra County. From 1902-1906, he was superintendent of the Continental dredge here, operated by the late W P Hammon, gold dredging pioneer. The Continental was the first continuous bucket line dredge. Myers also worked for the Guggenheim interests in Alaska, the Idlewild Mining Company in El Dorado County, and the Gold Bluff Mine in Sierra County before entering the county clerk's office. As a boy of 4 he saw Lincoln as the president's body lay in state in Philadelphia. He was a life member of Henry Clay Masonic Lodge No 95 of Sutter Creek, Amador County. He is survived by his wife, Adelaide; two daughters, Mrs Rush Hendricks of Los Angeles and Mrs James T Cassell of San Francisco, and a granddaughter, Anne Cassell. Funeral services will be held at 2pm tomorrow in the First Congregational Church. Masonic rites will be held in Oroville Cemetery.
