Listed in the 1850 Tishomingo County, Mississippi Census as John Moses, age 1, born MS. With parents and sister Mary.

In the 1860 Smith County, Texas Census, John's parents and siblings are listed, but he isn't. Family records from Pauline Moses say that he came to Texas in 1866 with John Grisham (other records say it was George Grisham), who was living next to the family in the 1850 census, but that family is still listed in MS in the 1860 census, and John is not with them, either. Perhaps he was in some kind of a school?

There is a John Moses listed in the 1870 Calhoun County, Alabama Census, Precinct 14 as 19 years old, born AL, cannot read or write. Living in the Easterwood household. There is also a William Mosely, age 20, born AL, cannot read or write, listed in the 1870 Yazoo County, MS Census, District 1, as a Stock Herder. There is also a John Mosley, age 6/12, born AL, listed in the 1850 Fayette County, Alabama Census. Not sure if either of these is our John, but the second one sounds quite possible.

Listed in the 1880 Cherokee County, Texas Census, District 16, Page 34B, Enumerated June 24, Dwelling 293, Family 297, as John Mosley, age 30, works at saw-mill, cannot write, born Georgia, parents born Georgia. With Nancy, Thom, Mary, and mother-in-law Malissa Cole.

Fed horses for the soldiers as a child during the Civil War.

According to Steve Moody's family tree on the internet: "Nancy Moses was born in 1816 in Tuscoloosa AL. She died in 1870 in Rusk, Cherokee County, TX. She was buried in Holly Springs cemetery,Cherokee County, TX. She married Alexander Acker on 2 Jan 1834 in Tuscoloosa AL." - Maybe an Aunt?

There are records of a John Moses marrying a Mary Armstrong on 9/22/1831 in Jefferson County, AL, and a John T. Moses marrying an Anna Hogan on 3/13/1848 in Bibb County, AL (John T. and Anna are not John William's parents).

Birth and marriage dates come from handwritten family tree information from Pauline Moses. Tombstone lists his birth year as 1850.
