Facts and Events
It is very possible that John Miller is the son of the John Miller, a tailor, and his wife Elizabeth who were in Salem in 1652. Our John apparently came to Cape Porpus about 1661at the age of about 22, from Beverly, MA. He was represented in court in Wells in 1662 by John Chater, whose daughter Hannah he married. Then the couple moved down the Maine coast to Jeremisquam (now Westport, ME), near the mouth of the Kennebec River, and lived there for seven years. In 1669 they sold their house and land and returned to Cape Porpoise, and probably settled on the land that had belonged to Hannah's father, Lieut Chater. When King Philip's War broke out, John sent his family to his wife's relations in Newbury. In 1690, the second Indian war broke out and Miller and his family fled to New Hampshire. |
