    Son of David McWhorter & Mary Poston. Husband of Elizabeth Wilson. John and Elizabeth (Wilson) McWhorter settled on a land grant of one thousand acres at Pickens (now Oconee County) South Carolina, in 1805. In that year, John became a charter member and Co.-founder of the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church above Walhalla. He subsequently became a ruling Elder and Clerk of Session. Elizabeth died on July 10, 1840, and was buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery where her grave marker still stands. John moved to Walker County, Georgia, following his wife's death, and died there on February 19, 1855, where he was buried at Fairview Cemetery (five miles south of Lafayette, at the foot of Pigeon Mountain).
