John McRae was the first registered McRae birth in New Zealand. John McRae came to Australia in 1874 where he followed pastoral and grazing pursuits at Hay, NSW. He married Annie Lucy REYNELL on 10 Sep 1890 in Bendigo. Annie Lucy REYNELL spoke both German and French and was an accomplished pianoforte accompanist and singer, having learnt music from a German Professo. After their marriage they settled at Camberwell, Melbourne, where he was interested in mining ventures. For the last 23 years of their life they lived at Beechworth.
