He died as a result of action at Bottoms Bridge, VA. There is a Regimental History (see esp Ch 4, "To the Chickahominy") in the book "The story of one regiment: he eleventh maine infantry volunteers in the war of the rebellion NY 1896" He was in Company D, 11th Maine, 4th Corp, Army of the Potomac.


This engagement was art of McClellan's Peninsula campaign. John V was one of two sons of Warren and Mary to dies in the Civil War in 1862, the other being his older brother Warren A.
