John became Lt. Col. John Miller MCNAIR of the 79th Regiment (Cameron Highlanders) (family letters) and possibly served until about 1856 in the Crimea (R. Huggard). In 1861 John visited his sister Mary (census). In 1871 he was maybe a Captain resident in 42nd Regiment at Aldershot, Hampshire (census).
