This is correctly the husband of Rosannah Hardin; John McMahan Jr., son of John and Deborah Stockton McMahon, was not her husband.

John McMahan (c. 1750 - Aft. Aug 1837)

This man's father, Richard McMahan, is designated as a patriot by the Daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor Number A203439. His was civil service. (Please see this record at the DAR site.) There is no known record of John McMahan, husband of Rosannah, as either a civil servant or a soldier of the Revolution, but John McMahan is shown after moving to Kentucky, to have performed civil service there.

William, John's grandfather, was a founding father of the Frederick County Virginia. A brief bio can be found at: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24275490/person/1704220071/media/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid|pgNum

John McMahan, (Richard, William]) was evidently born in Frederick County, Virginia about 1750. This birthplace and date are based on his father's residence from property records of the time, and on the place of probate of his grandfather's will c.1749 in Frederick County.

Before the Revolution the Hardin & McMahan families lived and owned property variously in several of the Northern Virginia counties: Frederick, Monongahela and Fauquier Counties and others.

John's wife, Rosannah Hardin, is believed to have been born about 1760 in Fauquier County, VA. She was the daughter of Martin Hardin, a brief,, unattributed bio of whom follows:

"Martin [Hardin]operated an ordinary(tavern). He served in the French and Indian Wars as well as the border militia during the revolution. In 1765 he moved his entire family to George's creek,on the Monongahela River. Then sometime after 1780 they moved to Springfield,Ky. Martin married Lydia Waters,a descendant of Edward Waters, who came to Jamestown,Va in 1608. He [Martin] owned a large amount of land. He moved from Fauquier Cty.,Va to Pennsylvania. He also served in the Pa.militia during the revolution."

John and Rosannah Hardin were married about 1775 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Their first son, Richard, (after John's father) was also born Abt. 1775. Several of John's & Rosannah's children, Joseph, Rachel and Martin were born between 1776-1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia.

Between 1780-1790 many of the Hardins and McMahans (including John, Rosannah; John's father, Richard and several of Rosannah's Hardin kin) of these Northern Virginia counties relocated to Kentucky. John and Rosannah located in Nelson County and Richard; John's father, in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Richard is known to have entered 1000 acres on 29 Jun 1782 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

As it is key to proving the identity of the husband of Rosannah Hardin, her father, Martin's will, dated 17 Nov 1779, and probated in Monongalia County, Virginia about 1788 is quoted in part:

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Rosannah McMahan Twenty pounds current money of Virginia and no more I also lend my said daughter Rosannah McMahan and her husband John McMahan five negros one named Nell and her four children during their natural lives. And the said Nell and her child Hannah’s future increase not to be hired out or Mortgaged without the consent of my executors. I also give the said negros to my daughter Roseanna McMahons children to be divided as she and her husband John McMahan may think fit how and when…

Tax records in Nelson County, Kentucky, show John taxed for 1786, in David Cox's Company, 1787 in J. Ferguson's Company, 1788,again David Cox and 1791, Thomas Morton. In 1788, John was taxed for land and property and, critically, for a slave named Hannah. [Nelson County Tithes Mary Yoder 2000 http://files.usgwarchives.net/ky/nelson/taxlists/taxes/nelson4.txt]

This Hannah is certainly the daughter of Nell, both of whom, as quoted in his will above, Martin “loaned” to Rosannah and John and bequeathed to their children.

Between Martin’s will and the above-named tax records, these reports prove: that John and Rosannah were married; that they were Martin’s son-in-law and daughter; and that this particular couple was living in Nelson County, Kentucky, at the time they received the slave, Hannah, which was sometime between his taxation in 1787 and 1788. [The other John, s/o John and Deborah Stockton McMahan, was living in Augusta, VA in 1788.]

John and Rosannah had the following children in Kentucky before 1790: Sarah, William, Lydia, Nancy, John and Rosannah Mary.

John's wife, Rosannah, died in Nov 1789 in Nelson County Kentucky, just weeks after the birth of their daughter, Rosannah Mary. Having many young children in the home, John remarried some time in 1790. His second wife was Jane (Jennet) Geoghagen. Jennet is named in several land transactions after their marriage.

Together the couple evidently had twelve children. Following is a list provided by Pfaadt5, who added this information online on 17 Apr 2013.
