"John McLaughlin was born in 1753-1754 in VA, enlisted in the 5th VA line at
Liberty City (Bedford), Bedford Co, VA in February 1775 or 1776 (he listed both dates in his pension application), fought in the Chesapeak (sic) area and in the battle of Guilford Court House, lived near or in Eddyville, Caldwell Co, KY (Eddyville is now in Lyon Co, KY, as Lyon Co was formed from Caldwell Co land), moved to Lafayette Co, MO in 1827 with his wife and son, John McGlothlin, Jr. and died there on 17 July 1828.

gggg grandfather John's wife's given name was Sarah - don't yet know her last name and they had children: John McGlothlin, Jr; Susannah McLaughlin who married John Keeny; Elizabeth McLaughlin who married Isaac Lewis: Charles M. McGlothlen who married Jane M. Davis; Margaret McLaughlin who married William Lewis; Rebecca McLaughlin who married William Davis; and Mary Hannah "Polly" McGlothlen who married Rev. Jonathan A. Keeney.

I believe John and Sarah lived in Greenbrier Co, VA (WV) until about 1795, then moved to the Jefferson / Cocke Co, TN area until about 1810 where several of their children were married, then moved to Caldwell Co, KY until 1827 when they and John Jr. moved to Lafayette Co, MO. After John Sr. died, widow Sarah bought 82 acres of land in adjacent Ray Co, which she sold in 1834. I believe she died shortly thereafter."

  2.   Revolutionary War Pension Application of John McLaughlin, S34987

The following is a verbatim transcription of the transmittal letter dated 12 August 1819 from Matthew Lyon, Pension Agent in Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KY, to John C. Calhoon, Secretary of War in Washington City, and the enclosed pension applicant John McLaughlin’s renewed (updated) Invalid’s pension application of 28 May 1818. (The transmittal letter refers to John McLaughlin’s original pension application as being dated 28 May 1818. Dates of 25 and 26 May also appear
    in the record.
It appears from these items that John McLaughlin’s renewed pension application was dated as Eddyville August 12th 1819.
    Sir,
I enclose & send the application of John McLaughlin for a pension
It seems that McLaughlin applied to the Court in May 1818 on the Subject of his pension & was heard, that he depended on my forwarding the copy of the record of his application without his doing and thing farther on his part; altho I charged him as well as every other such applicant after the issuing of the Court to bring me the Copy of the record from the Clerk. Thus he has waited in expectation like some of those who applied about the same time for an Answer until last Court when I found that his application had never gone forward to your office. I then told him to renew his application to the Court in order to obtain a certificate exactly agreeing with the form required by your office of which I have lately received a Copy. he has done so. it is inclosed with a Copy of his old application which is sent in order that his pension may commence at the date of it which is May 28, 1818.
I perceive that there are more than twice as many got on the pension list under the law of March 18th 1818 than I believed were living who had served in the Revolutionary Continental Army; so that contrary to my early opinion all your Caution was necessary I am very respectfully your Obed Srvt
M Lyon The Secretary of War

(John McLaughlin's Cert. of 25/26 May 1818 did not get sent to Washington City until August of 1819 because he misunderstood that he, not the court, had to specifically request an official copy and then take action to send it. As discussed in the transmittal letter, other Revolutionary War pension applicants also did not understood that they, and not the Court, were to initiate the action to send their pension applications to the Secretary of War in Washington City. 3.   John McLaughlin was born about 1754, he said in Virginia, and his wife, Sarah was about his own age. We know nothing about her parents or exactly when they married.

John was a Revolutionary War private. From his Rev War pension files, we know he and Sarah moved from Caldwell Co, VA (WV) in 1827 to Lafayette Co, MO with his son, John McGlothlin, Jr. (That's how they spelled it.) John Sr. was at that time nearly blind, lame and broke. He died in Lafayette Co, MO on 17 July 1928.

    >From his probate files, we know that John McLaughlin, Senior left a widow, Sarah, and seven living children when he died. It is not known how many other children, if any, predeceased him. The descendants of two of the children, Charles McGlothlen and Mary (McGlothlen) Keeney are known to have been comprehensively investigated.
