- McCullock, John - born Albemarle County, Virginia; moved 1769 with father to Washington County, Virginia, where entered service 1777 while resided with father; entered service 1777 there in father Lt. Thomas McCullock's company; father died 10/12/1780 as result of wounds from Battle of King's Mountain; soldier received Pension age 70 in Washington County, Virginia, 1832; died there 4/29/1838; no children by 1st wife who was mentioned but not named; married (2) Elizabeth, & he survived by their children: Thomas I/J born 8/4/1835 & Sarah Ann W. born 4/6/1837; widow married (2) 12/25/1838 to Augustin R. Mallicote; they resided 1856 in Washington County, Virginia, when Jacob Lynch of Abingdon, Virginia & Tobias Smyth of that county, as guardian's for soldier's children, applied for boundy land warrant, & Bounty Land Warrant 47666 granted to children Thomas I/J & Sarah Ann W; Robert McCulloch (no kinship given) made affidavit there then. John McCulloch1 b. circa 1761, d. 29 April 1838 Father Thomas McCulloch1 d. 12 Oct 1780 Mother Isabel Patrick BirthCirca circa 1761 John McCulloch was born circa 1761 based on his 1832 pension application in which John stated he was in his 71st year.2 Migration 1769 In 1769 John's father moved the family into the wilderness of southwest Virginia, settling on "Mockinson" [Moccasin?] Creek in present day Washington County. Military John was an active participant in the militia activities of Washington Co. in the early days of the Revolutionary War. At the age of 15 he volunteered to defend the frontier against the frequent Indian incursions. He also participated in an expedtion to Kentucky to defend Boone's Station. and in 1780 he served under his father during the expedition to Kings Mountain. He was near his father when he fell mortally wounded during the ensuing battle against the Loyalist troops led by Col. Ferguson.2 Milit-Pens 20 May 1833 John applied for a Revolutionary War pension on May 20, 1833. He was granted $24.66 per year retroactive to March 4, 1831. Marriage 26 Sep 1833 or 6 Nov 1833 He married, as his second wife, Elizabeth Tilley on on 26 Sep 1833 or 6 Nov 1833 in Washington County, Virginia.3 John was about 72 at the time of the marriage; Elizabeth was perhaps 18. Will 9 Jan 1838 John wrote his will on Jan. 9, 1838. He left 1/3 of his lands and slaves to Elizabeth during her natural life. The balance of the estate was to be divided between John's children Thomas Jefferson McCulloch and Sarah Ann Washington McCulloch when the eldest reached 21 or either of them married. John charged his children with caring for the slaves and added a codicil on April 3, 1838 further clarifying that they were not to be hired out to work at the saltworks or ironworks. Tobias Smyth and Jacob Lynch were appointed as executors. When the will was recorded on May 29, 1838 they were required to post $20,000 in bond.4 Death 29 Apr 1838 John died on 29 Apr 1838.5 On Christmas Day, 1838 Elizabeth remarried. Her new husband was Augustine R. Mallicote with whom she went on to have a large family. In July 1858, a few months after John and Elizabeth's youngest child Sarah turned 21, she and her brother Thomas sold the land they inherited from John to Augustine Mallicote for $6,714.
