Scotland Valuation Rolls (provided by ScotlandsPeople) declaration for Rothesay 1855: John Macalpine, shipmaster, was the proprietor of numbers 1 and 3 Victoria Street, Rothesay. The buildings were divided into five dwellings and businesses including one he occupied himself and a guest house run by his sister-in-law Mrs James Macalpine.

According to the Valuation Rolls of 1875 this property was still in the family hands. At that time the owner was his daughter "Mary McAlpine, wife of John Palmer, mariner". 3a Victoria Street is the address given on the Birth Registration of her son, John Gibson Palmer, born 23 July 1872.

The surname McKinlay also shows on the same page of the 1855 Valuation Rolls owning or occupying businesses and property in the very immediate area. McKinlay was John McAlpine's wife's maiden name.

The property directly faced the ferry terminal. The houses were there until sometime between 2000 and 2005 when they were pulled down and replaced by modern business units.

In 1855 John McAlpine was presented with a silver cup by H. P. Setna. This has come down the family, but no further information about the donor has ever come to light.
