Facts and Events
There are two grandsons of Rev. John Mayo, both named John Mayo, of about the same approximate age. One was the son of Rev. John's son John, and the other was the son of Rev. John's son Samuel. One of them married Hannah Freeman, but we must be careful in the identification of which one it was. The will of John Mayo of Harwich, the husband of Hannah Freeman, (an abstract at Pane-Joyce Genealogy) dated 3 Feb 1723/4, bequeaths to his son Samuel rights "in Oyster Bay or Jericho on Long Island N.Y." and mentions his wife Hannah. Given that Captain Samuel Mayo was a mariner, and bought a large tract of land in Oyster Bay from the Indians (see, for example, Source:Genealogical and family history of the state of Maine, p. 1780), this suggests that the John Mayo who married Hannah Freeman and died in Harwich was the son of Captain Samuel Mayo. Also, a genforum posting discusses a deed by Joseph Mayo who identifies himself as "eldest son and heir of Samuel Mayo" and mentions his "well Beloved Brother John Mayo of Hing[h]am", which given that John Mayo married Hannah Freeman in Hingham, is another strong argument that the John Mayo who m. Hannah Freeman was the son of Samuel Mayo. The record of the birth of the John Mayo who was born in Eastham 15 Dec 1652 was listed in the family of John Mayo and Hannah Lecraft, i.e., the other candidate. (See Source:Mayflower Descendant, p. 6:205.) That is probably not the John Mayo who married Hannah Freeman. A genforum posting, item 7, suggests this John may have died young, as his father's will in 1702 did not mention him. References
