About John Maberry
John4 Mabry (Mayberry) (John3, George2, Francis1) moved from Lincoln County, North Carolina to Rutherford County, Tennessee in about 1804. [Source: Donald E. Collins, eminent Mabry researcher and author of the "Mabry Family" book].

John Maberry was probably born between 1740-50 in Brunswick County, Virginia. His family soon moved across the line into that part of Edgecombe County, North Carolina which became Halifax County late in 1754. They lived on the south side of the Roanoke River along Pretty Creek and Pork Creek in what today is the extreme northwestern corner of Halifax County. It was probably there that John Mabry married. Unfortunately the name of his wife remains unknown. A short time later he moved to South Carolina and it was from there that he served for a total of 481 days in the militia under Capt. James Thomas in 1778, 1779 and 1780. Capt. Thomas was married to Susannah Mabry, daughter of Ephraim Mabry and Mary Poole. We know that John Mabry lived in Chester County in January 1794 and that he was a juror there. He later moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina and from there to Rutherford County, Tennessee about 1804.

The will of John Maberry was written on 10 Mar 1837; it was presented to the Rutherford Co. court on 16 Oct 1837. Among the items mentioned in the will is a list of the following slaves: Bob, Anicke, Tom, Dave, Harry, Buckner, Bill and Nancy.

John Mabry of Lincoln County, North Carolina and Rutherford County, Tennessee
The identity of John Mabry, who lived on Little Catawba Creek in Lincoln County, North Carolina as early as 1790 and moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1805, has long been a mystery. He was born between 1740 and 1750. He could be the John Mabry in the 1786 tax list of Granville County, NC who is shown with four sons under 21 years of age.
Very few records of John Mabry have been found in Lincoln County, North Carolina. On April 4, 1803 he bought 200 acres of land on "waters of Little Catawba" from James Henderson. The land adjoined Wm. McClure, John McClure and Robt. Martin. On 8 November 1805 when he was moving to Tennessee, John Mabry sold this same land to Robert Patterson. It is interesting to note that John Henderson, a brother of James Henderson, also moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee and bought land on the west fork of Stones River.
The census records tell us that John Mabry was married more than once. We know nothing about his first wife and only that his second wife was named Polly. His will, written and probated in Rutherford County in 1837, names twelve children, perhaps in the order of their birth. This order would seem to be confirmed by what we can reconstruct from the census records of his sons. While the will does not name a son, William, there was a William Mabry living nearby in Lincoln County and it seems more than a coincidence that a 21 Jul 1804 Rutherford County deed concerning land on the east side of the main fork of Stones River refers to adjacent land leased by William Mabry. There is a petition signed by citizens of Rutherford County dated 27 September 1812, in which Daniel, Samuel, John and William Maburary's [sic] signatures appear together. William could well have been John Mabry's oldest son. If so it would have been natural for him to precede the rest of the family in their move to Tennessee. If this is true, it may be that he was not mentioned in John Mabry's will because he had already received his share of the estate or because he died before the will was written in 1837. Another likely son of John Mabry is Thomas J. Mabry, who was born between 1785-90 and died in Rutherford County in 1826, leaving a widow, Sarah G. Mabry and at least six sons.

Benjamin Mabry b ca 1784-88; m Sally Thornton (another source calls her Sarah Byrd; the age between Benjamin and Sally in the 1850 and 1860 census almost certainly points to her being his second wife, thus he may have first married Sally Thornton and then Sarah Byrd 24 Jan 1822; (1840 MS:Madison; 1850 MS: Madison; 1860 AR: Chicot; served in War of 1812.

13. George Mabry Nothing is known of George Mabry, except that he is mentioned in his father's will in 1837. No records have been found in Rutherford County in the name of George Mabry. However, there is a George Mayberry in the 1840 census of Marshall County which is adjacent to Rutherford. It is possible that this is the son of John. Or there is another George Mayberry in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1840 who would be about the right age.
