Vernon was a farmer. Initially he farmed with his father and later formed a partnership known as Longenecker Brothers with his Brother Preston. He attended the Chronister one room school. He attended church at Zion Brethern in Christ Church and the Abilene Wesleyan Church. ABILENE — John Vernon Longenecker, 83, of Abilene, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2011. He was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Navarre, south of Abilene, the son of John B. and Ruth E. (Longanecker) Longenecker. Growing to manhood in the Buckeye community, he attended local schools. On Nov. 25, 1960, he was united in marriage to Marilynn J. Bible. All their married life was been spent farming in the Buckeye community. He was a member of Zion Brethren In Christ Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Merle David Longenecker, in 1967; four sisters, Mary, in infancy, Martha Merrit, Bertha Durkee and Laura Kuntz; and two brothers, Frank and Floyd Longenecker. Survivors include his wife, Marilynn J. Longenecker, of Abilene; daughter, Delores Longenecker, of Salina; two sons, Kent and wife Carol Longenecker, of Sheridan, Ind., and Dale and wife JoElla Longenecker, of Parkville, Mo.; five grandchildren, Steven, Kathie, Ruth, Erika and Lauren Longenecker; five sisters, Fannie McBeth, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Florence Kirkland, of Wichita, Lois Musser, of Petersburg, W.Va., Twila Holt, of Talmage, and Dorothy Girard, of San Angelo, Texas; and a brother, Preston Longenecker, of Abilene. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Zion Brethren in Christ Church, with Pastor Bob Beaty officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials in his name be made to World Hope International or the Gideons.
