Facts and Events
John Ling was the oldest son of his parents Anthony Ling and Elizabeth. Jo hn was reportedly born about 1858 in Hesse Darmstadt, Ger. He moved wi th his family Ger to America in about 1781. John would have be en 13 or 14 years old. They reportedly landed at Baltimore, MD, a nd resided for a time in Washington CO MD, near Hagerstow n. By 1784 they had moved to Bedford CO PA and settled in B edford Township about six miles north of the town of Bedford. The Bedford CO PA records show that John was initially asse ssed as a single man in 1789. It appears that John spent the rest of his l ife in Bedford Twp Bedford CO PA. He is listed the re on the censuses in 1790, 1810, 1820, and 1830. His parents and a numb er of his siblings seem to have moved about 20-25 miles west to Somerset C ounty, in about 1795-1800. It appears that John had some tax problems in the 1820's, and he had to se ll off some of his property, but it is hard to understand what that is a ll about. I could not locate John on the 1840 census, which probably mea ns he had died by then.
[edit] =====================From the 1790 Federal Census of Bedford CO PA, page 245; fr om ancestry.com, image #9 of 17: John Linn; 1 male 16 years and older (John), 1 male under 16 years (appare ntly Daniel), 1 female (Catherine) Although the spelling is a bit off, I am pretty sure this is Anthon y. He is listed near to the households of his parents and his brother Pete r. [edit] =====================I have been unable to locate John on the 1800 census, anywhere in Pennsylv ania. He should be listed near to the household of his brother Peter, w ho is listed in Bedford CO but he isn't. I can only conclude th at he was in Bedford CO and somehow omitted from the census. [edit] ====================I located a Ling household in the 1810 census, in Bedford Twp Bedfo rd CO PA, but it was a Daniel Ling. I was unable to loca te a John Ling there, even though all the information that I have indicat es that he should be there. I have concluded that this household must be J ohn's, and that somehow it was listed under the name of the oldest son Dan iel. The dates seem to match up pretty good with the dates of birth th at I had. Perhaps he was the one who spoke to the enumerator. I found th is at ancestry.com, image #4 of 5. Daniel Ling; 2 males under 10 years (Conrad and Christian), 1 male 10-15 y ears (John), 2 males 16-25 years (Jacob and Anthony), 1 male 26-44 years ( Daniel), 1 male 45 years and older (John); 1 female 10-15 years (Catherine ), 1 female 45 years and older (Catherine) [edit] ======================In the will of his father in Stony Creek, Somerset CO PA, d ated August 7, 1803 and probated on July 24, 1813; John Ling was bequeath ed 200 acres in Bedford CO. This was apparently at least some of the p roperty his father used to own in Bedford CO. [edit] =====================From the 1820 Federal Census of Bedford Twp Bedford CO Pennsylv ania, page 9; from ancestry.com, image 5 of 7: John Ling; 1 male 10-15 years (Conrad), 1 male 16-18 years (Christian ), 2 males 16-25 years (Christian and John), 1 male 45 years or over (John ); 1 female 45 years or older (Catherine); 4 persons engaged in agricultu re (the four males). John and Catherine seem to be living near to the households of their so ns Anthony, Daniel, and Jacob. Probate records from Somerset CO:
