About John Lewis of Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

From "Some Descendants of John Lewis & Margaret Rees of Wales, 1713-1997", by Gail W. Hinson:

Most genealogists researching Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, are familiar with the famous pioneer John Lewis. He was an original settler in Augusta County, Virginia, and played host to George Washington. This John Lewis is the other John Lewis, who lived nearby in Shenandoah County (which was previously Orange, then Dunmore, then Frederick County). Our John was also a pioneer in Western Virginia, and although he was not as prominent, his is also an interesting story.

Both John Lewises had wives named Margaret, and both came to America circa 1729-1737. The more famous John Lewis came here from Ireland, and three of his sons were American Officers in the Revolutionary War; General Andrew Lewis, Col. William Lewis, and Col. Charles B. Lewis. This John Lewis came to America from Wales, and had two sons who fought in the Revolution; Mordecai Lewis and Reese Lewis, who were both Privates in Captain Jacob Holleman's Company of the Virginia Dunmore County Militia.
