Will of John Jones

  • Pages 270-71. Will of John Jones of Orange County, being sick and weak, dated 31 May 1758.
To my loving wife six Negroes Simon, Jo, Dick, Great Dinah, Emanuel and Little Simon.
The rest of my Negroes be kept together until one of my children come of age or marry and then to be equally divided between my two children.
My stock and household stuff be kept together as long as my wife lives a widow or should die and then in either case to be equally divided between my loving wife and childen, or my two children.
If my two children should die without heirs, the Negores I had by my wife go to her heirs and my land whereon I now live and the rest of my Negroes unto my loving sister Elizabeth Taylor. (Note: Elizabeth Taylor was actually John Jones' half-sister, child of his mother's second marriage with Zachary Taylor).
As I have sold a tract lying in the countys of Stafford and Prince William to Joseph Stone and James Calk, my executors make deeds for the said lands to Stone and Calk, they paying the money for the said lands according to agreement.
My loving wife Mary Jones and her two brothers Maj. John Bell and Mr. Thomas Bell of Prince William County and Mr. Zachary Taylor of Orange County executors.
My estate be not appraised.
