John grows up in Enderby, and at age 19 is working as a Boot finisher at Messrs Barlby Tomlinson & Atkins. On 9 September 1914, weeks after the start of WW1 he enlists, joining the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment), 1st Garrison Battalion, one of the many volunteers to join Kitcheners army. In August 1915 he is in the Battle of Sari Bair, part of the August offensive - the final attempt made by the British to seize control of the Gallipoli peninsula.Around December or January his division is withdrawn to Egypt, possibly guarding the Suez canal. On 16 March 1917 he transfers to the Royal Engineers as a sapper, and in June that year he is classified as "permanent base" by the medical board due to disability resulting from Galipoli campaign: D.A.H: (Disordered Action of the Heart), a vague term commonly used by the military at that time to describe a range of problems. In October was "admonished" for disobeying an order; he refused to get up after three warnings, and later in the month spends time in hospital with his condition. After the war ends in 1918 John signs up for a year with the Army of Occupation. He visits home for a week's leave in the summer of 19, returning to Egypt via Boulogne and Marseilles. He is demobilised in Alexandria in May 1920, and marries Menta Boulous in 1921. Appears on passenger list on board the ship Moreton Bay travelling with son Ernest (age 9) from Southampton to Port Said, departing 12 Sept 1934.
