From S.E. Thomas <sfevet@@maclaunch.com An account filed by John Israel on October 24, 1710, reported that eight Negroes had been given to the children of Col. Dorsey in his lifetime. Before John Israel settled in the Province he had been a Merchant of London, England, but declared himself a resident of the Province of Maryland on October 19, 1701. He died testate in Baltimore County in 1723, leaving his estate to his minor children and wife Sarah. No legacies were bequeathed to his Dorsey step-children. Father: John ISRAEL b: 1647 Mother: Mary CRAWLEY b: ABT 1648 from the research of Linda Carroll Bifulco John Israell, "Gentleman", was a merchant of London who appears first in Md. records in 1698, in A. A. Co. For a few years he acted as Factor for a London firm, but became prominent at once in the affairs of Md. He is mentioned in the records as Deputy Commissary as early as 1699, again in 1703 and many times there-after up to his death in 1723. From 1701 he was of Baltimore Co., having bought large amounts of land on the north side of the Patapsco, just over the line from A. A. Co. His various purchases totalled over 1,500 acres. Many of the references refer to him as "One of His Lordship's Justices", from 1716 to his death in 1723. In 1706 he m Margaret Larkin Dorsey (Mrs.), widow of Col. Edward Dorsey and dau of John Larkin. He m 2ndly Barbara (???), and 3rdly Sarah (???). In 1722-23 he was appointed as one of the seven Trustees or "Visitors" for Baltimore Co., empowered to erect public schools, under an act of that year, creating the first schools in Maryland.
