John Hurley was born circa 1805 in Ireland.

John's first wife was Nancy. Nancy was born in Ireland around 1812 or 1814. They had five children. They were Margaret, Frances, Daniel, Mary and Charles (Charlie or Charlotte).
Mr. and Mrs. John Hurley left Ireland for France during the persecution of the Catholics. They later came to America.
I do not know when Margaret Hurley was born or where. She is listed in the probate records as having married Mr. John Fallon of New Orleans. I am guessing she was close in age to Frances and was born in Ireland, and no longer living with her father at the time of the 1850 Louisiana Census.
Frances was born on December 15, 1833 in Ireland.
The 1850 Louisiana Census provides the following information:

Daniel Hurley was born circa 1835 in Ireland. Mary Hurley was born circa 1837 in Ireland. Charlotte, or Charles was born circa 1841 in New York.

Before the Civil War, John Hurley had sugar plantations in Alabama and a hat and cap factory in New York. He spent most of the War in France. With his divided interests between the North and South, each side thought he favored the other.
In the Mobile City Directory of 1842 is listed a Jonathan Hurley, Hat Maker.
Jonathan Hurley, Hat Store, is listed in the Mobile City Directory of 1845.
In 1845 John Hurley is also referred to in reference to selling property to James Hurley. In this reference is mentioned John's wife Nancy and children Daniel and Margaret.

In the 1849 New Orleans Directory is John Hurley, hat-store, 84 Levee; dwelling 74 Julia, Levee fronting & parallel to river, from Espanade to suburbs, third municipality.
In the Louisiana Census of 1850 is listed John Hurley (45, Hatter, Ireland), Mrs. J (36, Ireland), Daniel (15, Laborer, Ireland), Mary (13, Ireland), Charlotte (9, NY), John (6 mo., LA). This puts John's marriage to his second wife, Ann Coakley to be prior to 1850. Her birth was circa 1814. Also living in their household were James Reirdon, 8 years, male born in Ireland and Biddy Bingham (30 years, female, Ireland).

In an old family letter is told this story. Margaret (Maggie) moved to California with her sister (?) , Frances as she crossed the country by rail from New York, sometime around 1855. Maggie married when she was around 16 and became Margaret Finch. She had a son, Charlie, when she was 17 years old. She died sometime after she was 82 in 1925, (according to Frances Weisser's date book), which puts her birth around 1843.
