The Howard Story by Lewis Edward Howard, April 17, 1981, Topeka, KS

Ebenezer Howard Represents the oldest generation of the Howard ancestors we have of records. His name appears in the first Federal Census Schedule, 1790, Canaan, Columbia Co, NY. When Ebenezer died c 12 June 1812, he left his widow Eunice and children, Martin, John, Hiram, Patty (wife of John Benedict), Abigail (wife of William Pierce), Lavina (wife of Samuel Stower), Phoebe (wife of Andrew Rukel) and three daughters, not of age, Lena, Susanna and Anna.

Martin removed to Madison Co, NY in Earlton & Hamilton. Abigail with husband William Pierce, and Lavina and husband, Samuel Stower also lived in Earlton & Hamilton.

Hiram, the youngest son, with his wife, Elizabeth Haight and two sons, Ebenezer and Hiram, were residing in New Lebanon, near Canaan, according to the 1850 Federal Census.

John Howard, second son of Ebenezer, and the second great-grandfather of the writer, was born 1792 and married Harriet DeWitt in Canaan, NY in 1811.

After Ebenezer's death, John, Harriet and children, John Benjamin and Harriet Jane moved to Granby, Oswego Co, NY, where their son, Lewis T. was born 11 August 1819. While Schedule of 1830 indicates there were five children, records for only two, Frank and Hannah were never located. Hannah supposedly married a Bart Tiffany in Michigan.

It is evident, from the records at the Canal Museum at Syracuse, NY that John took passage on the Erie Canal from Syracuse in 1828 to Michigan. Then in 1829, John and his family with cargo took passage on the Erie Canal from Syracuse enroute to Saline, Washtenaw co, Michigan. That was before Michigan was admitted as a State.

John purchased land in Pittsfield township of which he sold a part, then moved to Jackson County, which bordered Washtenaw County on the West.

John, Harriet and family settled in Pulaski Township in 1834 and were the first permanent settlers on what was known as Howard's Island.

Harriet, their daughter, married John Parsons of Sandisfield, Massachusetts. They remained in the Saline area while John was buying land. He bought land from sons, John B. and Lewis T., then sold the total acreage to Simon Cook.

John and Harriet moved to Grass Lake, MI and the two sons were married.

John B. married Malinda Lashier and Lewis T. married Betsey Y. Hurd. John moved back to the Saline Area where he was listed as a wagon maker by trade.
