When a boy, John went from Boston, Massachusetts to Mobile, Alabama on a sailing vessel, and soon settled in St. Stephens, a small town eighty-three miles NW of Mobile. The little hamlet was cursed by a disgruntled minister and three months later, yellow fever carried off many of the inhabitants. John was cashier in a bank when he died. He brought his sisters South and one of them, Ann, became a prominent educator. He was a great lover of flowers and so loved his own flower garden that at his request he was buried in it.
