    born in New London, Conn, Apr 1, 1766, Married November 22, 1787, Sarah Gates of Stonington, Conn., who died December 17, 1853. Captain John was in command of a vessel and engaged in the coast trade between New London and Stonington and other points prior to and following the year 1785. In 1793 he went from New London to the town now Neversink, NY, to Liberty, Sullivan County (now Ulster County), NY. He died there November 25 1851. The homestead is now owned and occupied by his grandson, Edward Champlin.
