    Burial
Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: Died during a trip from Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee, to Charlestown, South Carolina, to sell his fine horses.

He was the son of John Gilliland Sr. and Elizabeth (Young) Gilliland, early settlers in Cocke County, Tennessee. His father and grandfather, Robert Young, fought in the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War. John Gilliland Jr. married Elizabeth Dobyns in about 1805. Her parents were probably Batten Dobyns and Frances A. Littlepage. John Gilliland Jr. and Elizabeth (Dobyns) Gilliland's children were: Lewellen Gilliland (1806-1837), Eleanor Clifford (Gilliland) Purdom (1808-1886), Elizabeth Emma (Gilliland) Sawyers Willis (1811-1887), and Sarah Qualls (Gilliland) Howard (1812-1859). John Gilliland Jr.'s death occurred during a trip to sell his fine horses near Charlestown, South Carolina. He sent a message to his pregnant wife by his landlady that if the child was a boy, to name him John. The child was a daughter, Sarah Qualls Gilliland.
