John F. Gilliland was born on 14 September 1832 at Tennessee.2,3 He was the son of James Gilliland and Anna Farris.1 John F. Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Haywood County, Tennessee, enumerated 15 November 1850, living in the William L. Coppedge household with his mother Ann Gilliland.2 He married Harriet E. R. Norfleet on 3 January 1859 at Marshall County, Mississippi.4 John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of North Mt. Pleasant, Marshall County, Mississippi, enumerated 24 July 1860. Their son Fletcher Norfleet was listed as living with them.5 John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of DeSoto County, Mississippi, enumerated 27 August 1870. Their children Fletcher Norfleet, William R. (Will), Edward C., Lena, Anna, Johnson and Hallie were listed as living with them.6 John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Coldwater, Tate County, Mississippi, enumerated June 1880. Their children Fletcher Norfleet, William R. (Will), Edward C., Lena, Anna, Johnson, Hallie and Eva were listed as living with them.7 John F. Gilliland died on 11 January 1895 at Tate County, Mississippi, at age 62.3 He was buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Coldwater, Tate County, Mississippi.3
