Information from the 1881 census doesn't match recollections of Vida. According to Vida, - Ferguson, husband of Margaret Irvine, was an engine driver who committed suicide by drowning himself in the village pond. According to census, the father of Christopher was a quarryman. Must have died between 1885 and 1890. In 1881 this family was living at Nook lane, Dalston, Cumberland, England. Household consisted of John (43), Margaret (37), Annie (13), Sarah J (11), Joseph (9), Mary (7), Jannet (4), Margaret (2) and Christopher (5 months).

Death record for a John Ferguson aged 52 in march 1890 Wigton, Cumberland. Confirmed this by getting death certificate from records office. Died March 10th 1890. Cause of death "drowned himself while temporarily insane" at "Wellington Quarry, near Aspatria".

In 1901, John's widow Margaret was living at Broates Tce, Aspatria, Cumberland, England. Household consisted of Margaret (57), Joseph (29), Mary (27), Maggie (21), Christopher (19) and Emma (15).
