Can't find family on England 1841 census. 1851 census: age 13, living Orton Park, Orton. Scholar. With parents William (45, Ag lab), Sarah (42), and siblings William (12, scholar), Archibald (9), Mary (7), Johnston (4), and Young (1). 1861 census: age 23, railway labourer, lodger with Johnson family in Redworth, Durham, England (ARE THESE RELATIVES OF HIS MOTHER SARAH?). Household = James Johnson (30, head, railway lab, Thursby, Cumberland), Margaret Johnson (33, wife, Westmorland) and Christopher Johnson (1, son, Durham) and William Ewbank (16, "son-in-law" - seems to be the illegitimate son of Margaret Johnson, formerly Margaret Ewbank but unmarried in 1851, Westmorland, engine fitter) 1871 census: can't find him. Wife and children living in dumfries, scotland. Information from the 1881 census doesn't match recollections of Vida. According to Vida, - Ferguson, husband of Margaret Irvine, was an engine driver who committed suicide by drowning himself in the village pond. According to census, the father of Christopher was a quarryman. Must have died between 1885 and 1890. In 1881 this family was living at Nook lane, Dalston, Cumberland, England. Household consisted of John (43), Margaret (37), Annie (13), Sarah J (11), Joseph (9), Mary (7), Jannet (4), Margaret (2) and Christopher (5 months). Death record for a John Ferguson aged 52 in march 1890 Wigton, Cumberland. Confirmed this by getting death certificate from records office. Died March 10th 1890. Cause of death "drowned himself while temporarily insane" at "Wellington Quarry, near Aspatria". In 1901, John's widow Margaret was living at Broates Tce, Aspatria, Cumberland, England. Household consisted of Margaret (57), Joseph (29), Mary (27), Maggie (21), Christopher (19) and Emma (15). |
