John P. Faeth is listed in the 1900 census (roll 1357, enumeration district 100, sheet 16, line 49). He listed as renting a home at 61 Lautner Street with his wife of six years, Louisa (28), and two children, Edwarda (1) and Elmer (9 months). He was born in Bavaria in 1871 and immigrated to the United States in 1881. This was one of the heaviest years of German immigration to the United States. He was age 28 at the time of the census and was working as a printer. He was a naturalized citizen and could read, write, and speak English.

By the 1910 census (roll 1307, enumeration district 605, sheet 2A, line 36) John was living with his second wife of five years, Mary (Marie), and six children, Edwarda A . (12), Elmer S. (10), Alfred G. (10), John Paul Jr. (6), and Herbert Edward (less than one year). Their surname is spelled incorrectly as Faith. They lived at 1966 Lowrie Street. He was still working as a printer. According to Irma Faeth, he worked for a German-language newspaper and then later owned his own printing business called Fischer and Faeth which was one of the first union shops in Pittsburgh.

John Faeth is buried with his wife, Marie, and son, Elmer, in Voegtly Evangelical Church Cemetery, in Troy Hill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, section 2, site #91.

John Paul Faeth's first wife died in childbirth (probably while giving birth to son John). John had a wet nurse take care of his infant son. This woman apparently told everyone that John was going to marry her, which was not true. Someone introduced John to Marie Matrisch, herself a widow with a child, who had recently arrived from Prussia. The two were married.

According to the obituary of his business partner, Jacob N. Fischer, John Paul Faeth and Jacob Fischer established Fischer and Faeth Printing in 1908.
