1. Resided in Whitewater Township, Dubuque Co, Iowa.
2. Marriage took place on Shrove Tuesday, 1852.
3. According to family sources, he came to America with Johanna about 1851. However, their marriage in Auburn indicates that even if they did come over together, they were not married. His obituary says he came to America when he was 27, about 1848. Resided in New York state before moving to Iowa about 1854.
4. Naturalized as US citizen 6 Oct 1859. On his Declaration of Intent, 8 December 1856, he states he entered the United States 10 May 1846. His age at date of signing Declaration was 35, giving a calculated birthdate about 1821.
5. A birthdate of about 1820 is consistent with 1860, 1870, 1880 Census data. His 1881 obituary makes him 60 on "next St. John's Day"; if correct, this yields a birthdate of 24 June 1821.
6. Patrick Ahern first shows on 1880 Census.
7. Value of real estate (1870) $12000, personal $2180.
