Notes for JOHN M. DOWNEY: 1851 census says John came from Ireland in 1841. It is believed he came with 2 brothers in 1834. Brothers listed on the "Pallas" were Morton 22 yrs. and Thomas 32 yrs.. No proof of them being brothers but it has been said that John came as a stowaway with 2 brothers on the Pallas of Cork on the 2, June 1834.

This may be true because according to "The Ships List" the bark PALLAS of Cork sailed from Cork in ? 1833 and arrived in Saint John NB in June of 1833 with Robert Hall as master. Listed as being aboard are Downey, Morty age 22 - labourer and Downey, Thomas age 32 - labourer. No mention of John who would have been 14 at the time.( http://theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/pallas1833.htm )

Both John and wife Susan are buried in Pembroke Cemetery, Carleton Co. NB.

A search of our records shows the Marriage of John and "Maria " as follows: John Downy married Maria Susan Bittan on December 6, 1844 at St. Gertrude's Church with witnesses being Mertin Lyons and Mary Ann Lyons. They were married by Rev. Richard Veriker. I checked the Baptism records for the next ten years to see if there were children baptized here and no records found. Is it possible they would have moved after marriage? Hope this provides some clues for you. If you note the names spelled differently, that is how they are entered into the records and how we must show them. It was common in those years to spell the names how they sounded. If I can be of further assistance, please advise. Thanks, Brenda Denny, Secretary St. Gertrude's Catholic Church - Woodstock NB
