Wheeler, Born in Kentucky, he spent the greater part of his life in this county; Funeral Friday Afternoon. John H. Dowell, highly respected citizen and member of one of the most prominent families of Livingston county, died at the home of his son, Dr. R. L. Dowell, on Spring Hill street last night at the age of eighty-six. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church tomorrow, Friday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock. The services will be in the charge of the Rev. W. B. Alsbury. Burial in Edgewood Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Meade county, Kentucky, near Big Springs, August 7, 1842, the son of Elijah R. and Mary Dowell. His young days were spent in his native state, but in September 1861 he moved with his parents to Jackson twp., Livingston county, Missouri. When the Civil War broke out, young Dowell joined a company of Southern sympathizers which was raised by Dr. Frank M. Davis. This company was not called into action soon enough to suit the eager youth and he went down to Kentucky and joined the second Kentucky Cavalry under the famous General Joe Wheeler. Throughout the war Dowell served with valor and saw much hard service. He was captured once and served as prisoner of war to Alton, Illinois.

When the War was over, he returned to Livingston county, and engaged in farming. He married Elizabeth Simpson November 25, 1866 in Spring Hill, the Rev. James Turner officiating. She was born July 6, 1843 and died October 11, 1909. To this union were born: Dr. Robert L. Dowell, Dr. Horace S. Dowell, Mont L. Dowell of Chillicothe, Augustus Dowell, Los Angeles, California; Dr. George S. Dowell, Braymer, Missouri, Mrs. Lora Wingo, widow of Dr. Nova Wingo, Trenton, Missouri; a daughter, Arabella, died in infancy. A sister, Mrs. Barbara Brown, Crutchfield, Nebraska City; two brothers, Jacob S. Dowell, and rev. E. R. Dowell, of Jackson county survive. On February 8, 1912, Mr. Dowell married Mrs. Annie Earhart, who preceded him in death. Dr. Aurthur J. Simpson of this city is a nephew of the deceased.

Honest in all his dealings with his fellow man, industrious from his youth up, possessed of all the sterling qualities of the fine old Virginia and Kentucky stock from which he sprang, and if he had any failing, they leaned to virtue's side, John Dowell was a man of exemplary habits and character.

The body was removed to the Gordon Funeral Home where it was prepared for burial. The body was taken to the home of the son, R. L. Dowell on Spring Hill street this afternoon where it will remain until the hour of the funeral.
