E. R. DOWELL DEAD
A Citizen of War Time Passes Away.
In Jackson Township 42 Years.
He Died at the Age of Eighty-Two Years and Ten Months--He Was a Christian Nearly Fifty Years.
Elijah R. Dowell, one of the pioneer citizens of Livingston county, died at 11 o'clock Sunday night at his home in Jackson township after an illness of 18 days with pneumonia, a complication of diseases and a set-back. Mr. Dowell was eighty-two years and ten months old, and by his death Livingston county loses not only one of the oldest citizens, but also one of the best.
The funeral will occur Tuesday morning. Rev. Harris will preach the funeral sermon at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Church, and the burial will occur immediately after at Mount Pleasant cemetery.
Elijah R. Dowell, son of Jos. [sic] Dowell and Barbara Shacklett, was born in Mead county, Ky., March 31, 1820. He was married in Kentucky to Mary F. Haden June 17, 1837. they moved to Iowa in 1847 and settled in Van Buren county, but later they came to Livingston county in August, 1861, locating in Jackson township, and they have lived there ever since.
Mr. Dowell united with the Baptist church in 1857 and has been a consistent Christian since that time. He was a good man in every way, and his death marks the close of a long, noble life.
The deceased leaves a host of friends, a widow and the foolowing children to mourn his death: John H., Scott and Richard R. Dowell, of the forks of the river; J. M. Dowell of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Barbara Q. Brown of Nebraska City, Nebr. Sarah Brassfield, another child, is long since deceased. Dr. R. L. Dowell, of Chillicothe, was a nephew of the deceased.
