John Douglas was born on 5 November 1777, in South Carolina, United States, his father, James Alexander Douglas, was 42 and his mother, Rosanah/Rosanna Douglas, was 38. He married Margaret Jamison on 30 March 1803, in Glasgow, Barren, Kentucky, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 9 daughters. He died on 16 July 1844, in Saline, Illinois, United States, at the age of 66, and was buried in Eldorado, Saline, Illinois, United States.
