1738/9, January 8 - Johan Jacob Dispionit arrived in Philadelphia on "ye Billinder" of London, Joshua Pipon, Commander. The passengers were "Palatines. [Source: v. 42, pp. 250, 251, Pennsylvania German Pioneers (Strassburger, Ralph Beaver).] Johan Jacob Dispionit [spelled many ways, including Disponey and TisBonet], a French Huguenot, is said to have married a young girl who was on the same ship, and they travelled with other Palatine families from Philadelphia to the Shenandoah valley where the young couple settled in the area now known as Mountain Falls. They had six children. [Source: website called "The Hurts of Kentucky", which gives no sources.] Barnett was born about 1740; Joseph about 1743; Christopher about 1745; and three more about 1747, 1749, and 1751. The latter three died in 1746 with their parents in an Indian attack. They were buried on a hillock overlooking the homesite and rough stones marking the graves were visible as late as the 1950's, as was the original cabin and its many improvements. This is where Barnett, Joseph and Christopher lived until their marriages. [Source: ibid., Hurt website.] Barnett married and stayed in Frederick County, where he had Abraham, who died about 1798; Christine (Straudeman); Elizabeth (Pollock); and Mary (Dunfield). Joseph married in 1763 (person unknown), and moved to Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Margaret Rust in 1791, and he died in 1797. Christopher married Maria Jonet before 1771 and moved to Mercer County, Kentucky and died in 1816. [Source: ibid., Hurt website.] The 1777 Will of William Russell names a daughter "Susanna Disponet" and it is most likely that she had married Barnett. +++ 1756 "Jacob Havely and several of his family were killed near the present residence of Moses Russell, Esq. at the eastern base of the North mountain . . . Dispennet, and several of his family, and Vance and his wife were also severally killed by the same party of Indians, in the same neighborhood. . . Moses Russell, Esq. is under the impression that these people were killed in the summer or fall of the year 1756." [Kercheval, p. 104.] 1763, March 10 - Deed by Lord Fairfax to John Barnet Disponet of Frederick County, Virginia to 200 acres of land on a branch of Ceedar (sic) Creek and bounded by a survey made by Robert Rutherford (metes and bounds description). [John Barnet Disponet / Tisponet, heir of John Jacob Tisponet; no warrant. surveyed 25 March 1752, 200 acres including where he lives on Cedar Creek. Chain carriers John Dyer and Christopher Disponet and John Barnard (sic) Disponet. Surveyor: Robert Rutherford. [Source: Joyner's "Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys: Frederick County, 1747-1780, vol. 2 (1985), p. 47).] 1763, December 12 "Depositions by Peter Jordan and Christopher Tisponet before Jos. Glass, that they had heard John Jacob Tisponet dec'd say he intended to give his land to his son John Barnet. John Jacob Disponant, in whose name this land was surveyed, was killed at his own house by the Indians, it is proved by the deposition of Jordan and Christopher Disponant taken before Joseph Glass, a magistrate of Frederick [County], that the deceased had at several times in their presence declared that he intended to give this land to his son Jno Barnet Disponant. His Lordship has therefore ordered that a Deed issue in the name of his son Jno Barnet as it appears to have been the intention of the deceased, he being the next heir in this country and is not known whether his elder brother is living. /s/ B. Martin." [Source: information from George Ely Russell in Nov. 2008.] 1765, July 2 - Deed to Adam Shriver of 149 acres of Frederick County land on Duck Creek (a drain of Cedar Creek), beginning at corner to Robert Marney, and referring to "Barnet Disponet's Line" and "Disponet's Corner"; also John Dyer's Line. 1782 - Bernard (sic) Desponet (6 whites) was near both Joseph and Moses Russell in Joseph Longacre's head of household list for Frederick County. This tax list seems to include the four children mentioned on the "Hurt" website. 1791, April 18 - Frederick County personal property tax list B: Barnett Desponett 2 white males over 16 & 5 horses. 1800 - Frederick County personal property tax list B: Barnett Disponett 1 white male over 16 & 1 horse. 1810 Census for Frederick County: Barnett Desponett was listed next to Moses Russell, and John Russell was also close by. For Barnett the enumeration was 01001/00011. This means that Barnett was then 45+ years of age (born before 1765), as was his wife. The household also included a male 10-16 and a female 26-45. On Feb. 26, 1813, Barnett Desponett made his Will in Frederick County, Virginia. Witnesses were Moses and James Russell and also Elias Kackley, Jr. The testator did not name or mention a wife, but he did name daughters Christine Houseman, Elizabeth Pollack and Mary Dunfield, and grandchild John Desponet. Henry Richards was named Executor. [Source: summary of Will; original recorded in Frederick County Will Book 9, p. 468.] [Note: the will summary also includes the date of Nov. 6, 1815, which would be the date the Will was proved. |
