Disputed Lineage

G. Andrews Moriarty suggests (in a tentative pedigree) that his father was Ralf de Putenham (alive in 1241/2). However, Robert T. Putnam of Ontario, Canada, states that he was called John son of John, which, if true, makes Moriarty's speculation incorrect. Robert Putnam suggests that the best probability is that his father was John Fitz Wale de Puttenham. However, the dates don't appear to work, unless either the estimated birth years for the whole line of John Fitz Wale de Puttenham are later than they should be, or some of the information stated about John's son Roger de Putenham is incorrect, allowing his birth year to be moved to 1290 or later.

In his tentative pedigree, Moriarty identified him as the father of Sir Roger de Putenham of Putenham (husband of Helen Spigomel), and suggested his father was Ralf de Putenham of Putenham.
